In early 2009, UNILU created its first interdisciplinary research centre – the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT) with the aim to become a European centre of excellence and innovation for secure, reliable, and trustworthy ICT systems and services. SnT targets research and PhD education and provides a platform for interaction and collaboration between university researchers and external partners (industries, government bodies, institutions, and international actors) through its Partnership program.

The main SnT Research Group involved in CyberSec4Europe is the Critical and Extreme Security and Dependability Research Group – CritiX – headed by Professor Paulo Esteves-Veríssimo. CritiX pursues state-of-the-art research in extreme computing, more specifically, techniques handling extreme levels of threat, in four focal points: resilience of cyber-physical system infrastructures and control; internet and cloud infrastructures resilience; security and dependability of embedded components; data privacy and integrity in highly sensitive sectors.

UNILU’s expertise contributes to the development of research advancements in the area of biomedical data protection, some of which is demonstrated in the medical data exchange use case. Focusing on biomedical data and relevant processing systems, UNILU is investigating mechanisms and techniques to reconcile sharing with privacy and integrity of high-risk data (e.g. genomics; highly sensitive EHRs, as well as other sectors), and study their integration, as incremental security and dependability measures for the high end of risk, to complement other measures considered in the project.
